The owner wished to create a more open plan to their existing home, while addressing several wish list requirements. The design solution entails replaced the dead space beneath the deck with a new ground level family room under within the footprint of the existing deck. The room serves as a place for the children of the house to watch television, lounge and play.

The main floor level addition replace the old deck, raised the level of the existing kitchen and dining room floor level. The form of the new space is conceived as an inhabited trellis structure organized around new sunroom windows. The windows complement the adjacent great room double hung windows, but are aggregated to create the desired sunroom openness. Douglass fir roof rafters spaced on the posts between the windows, support the structural insulated roof panels. The ceiling is finished with V groove cedar siding, to maintain the trellis imagery. Built in book shelves beneath the windows create the inhabited porch look. The entire space is painted off white to move away from the natural deck imagery and create a Nordic Cabin ambiance. Large five feet wide roof overhangs protect the windows from rain and early afternoon sunlight. The flat roof structure reinforce the inhabited trellis structure while leaving all second floor windows intact. A new two level deck adds place to grill outside of the kitchen and a small area to lounge while keeping an eye on the children playing in the nearby pool.
